Things to Check When Your Wetsuit Zipper Won't Close

The zipper on your wetsuit won’t close, gets stuck halfway, or the slider has come off. When this happens, many people try to fix it by forcing the zipper shut.

However, the zipper area is particularly prone to wear and tear in wetsuits. Forcing the zipper open or closed can damage not only the zipper itself but also the surrounding fabric.

Before replacing something or trying to fix it at all costs, it’s important to first identify the root cause.

1. If the slider is loose

If the zipper slider has come off, isn't sliding smoothly, or is sticking out on one side, there may be a problem with the slider.

Pulling too hard may not only damage the slider or the zipper itself, but could also cause the fabric to tear. If the zipper is stiff, check its condition before pulling hard.

3. If water is getting in through the zipper

Even if the zipper is closed, water may still seep in through the zipper area on the back or chest. In such cases, the problem may be caused not only by the zipper itself but also by the surrounding fabric or the adhesive joints.

• Cold water is coming in around the zipper
• The fabric around the zipper is torn
• The adhesive on the inside is peeling off
• Previous repair work has deteriorated
• The zipper is no longer waterproof

Especially with semi-dry suits, water seeping in through the zipper can lead to feeling cold. It’s a good idea to check them early before winter sets in.

4. If the surrounding fabric is torn

In some cases, it is not the zipper itself that is damaged, but the fabric around it. In such cases, it may be necessary not only to replace the slider but also to reinforce or repair the surrounding fabric.

• The base of the zipper is torn
• The jersey is torn around the zipper
• The fabric on the back is peeling off
• The fabric is being pulled when opening and closing

If you force the zipper open or closed while the surrounding fabric is already weakened, the tear may spread. It is important to check it as soon as possible.

5. Cases That Can Be Repaired

If the condition is as described below, it may be possible to repair it.

• Condition that can be resolved by replacing the slider
• A condition that can be improved with minor repairs around the zipper
• The fabric around the zipper can be reinforced
• Condition that can be resolved by replacing the zipper
• The fabric is still soft throughout

The repair method depends on the condition of the zipper itself, the condition of the slider, and the degree of wear on the surrounding fabric.

6. Cases Where Repair Is Difficult

However, not all zipper defects can be repaired. In cases such as those listed below, it may be better to consider replacing the item.

• The entire fabric has become stiff
• There is a large tear around the zipper
• There is deterioration in multiple areas
• It's an old semi-dry model, and other parts are also worn out.
• The repair costs are too high
