Wetsuit Repair vs. Replacement: Which Pays Off? A Craftsman's Decision Checklist

Is it better to repair or replace your wetsuit? A craftsman's checklist to help you decide

When your wetsuit gets damaged, many people worry about
The question is , "Should I repair it or should I replace it?"
We have compiled some guidelines for making decisions from the perspective of a craftsman who repairs over 1,000 pieces of clothing per year.

1. First of all, the "years of use" is a major indicator

Of course, this will vary depending on how it is used and the storage environment, but a rough guideline is as follows.

  • 1st to 3rd year: Basically, "extending life by repair" is a realistic option
  • 4th to 5th year: Depending on the condition, consider repairing and extending the life of the device or replacing it.
  • More than 6 years: The fabric itself is often deteriorated, and in some cases replacement is recommended.

It's not as simple as "it's not okay because of this year."
We will judge the quality based on the elasticity of the fabric, cracks on the surface, and fuzziness of the jersey .

2. Cases suitable for repair

① The damage is "partial"

The following cases are suitable for repair:

  • Parts of the neck, wrists, and ankles were torn/stitches were broken
  • Holes or abrasions on the knees or buttocks
  • Only defective zipper slider
  • The size is a little tight/loose, so I want to adjust it in some areas.

These are often cases where if we just fix that one thing, the item can still be used .
Before buying a new item, it's worth considering the balance between repair costs and the lifespan of the item.

② The base dough is still fresh

If the rubber or jersey on the surface is still soft and elastic , there is a good chance that repairs can extend its life.
On the other hand, if the entire surface is hard and crackly, repairs may not last long.

3. Cases where you should consider replacing your device

① The entire fabric is worn out

If your wetsuit feels thin, hard, or cold all over , rather than just in one spot, it is a sign that it is nearing the end of its life.
In such cases, even if you make partial repairs, other parts may start breaking one after another, resulting in a vicious cycle.

② There are too many parts to repair

If you want to fix your neck, knees, buttocks, zipper, etc. at the same time,
The total repair cost can approach the cost of a new wetsuit .

As a craftsman,
"If you're going to fix it to this extent, it would be better to just buy a new one."
There are many cases where we have to tell you this.

3) The fit is significantly off.

If your body shape has changed significantly or if the wetsuit size is not right to begin with,
This may require some significant resizing.

If the fit is so off that partial adjustments are not enough,
If you take the plunge and get a swimsuit that fits your current body type, you will be much more comfortable in the water .

4. "Recommended repair patterns" from the perspective of craftsmen

  • I want to use my favorite brand or a piece that I have a special attachment to for as long as possible.
  • The overall condition is not bad, but there are some concerns about certain areas.
  • I want it to last for another 1-2 seasons as a "stopgap" until the peak season.

In these cases, repairs are well worth the extra lifespan.
On the other hand, we do not recommend repairing wet fabric just because you feel it would be a waste to do so .

5. If you are unsure, please send us a photo and your honest wishes.

Ultimately, it's best to think about this together, including how attached you are to the wetsuit .

  • Do you want to use it for a few more years?
  • Is it okay if we can get through the season?
  • Is it okay to get the bare minimum for now, assuming I'll upgrade to a different model?

If you could tell me your true feelings,
We will give you honest advice from a craftsman's perspective on whether to "repair" or "replace."
